Dolphin & Whale Watching Kalpitiya
Dolphin Watching
Kalpitiya is the paradise of Dolphins. You can see pods of 1000 dolphins. Kalpitiya is home to a variety of dolphins that can be found in close proximity to the coast – the Spinner dolphin being the most common. Other dolphins that can be spotted here include Bottlenose, Risso’s, Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins, etc. Dolphin season in Kalpitiya is November to April.
Whale Watching
You can be seen Blue Whales (largest mammal in the world), Bryde's Whales , Sperm Whales , Killer Whales , False Killer , Dwarf , Melon Headed Whales , Cuvier's Beaked Whales and if lucky, the elusive Indian Blue Whales in Kalpitiya. November to December and March to April showcases the whales.
Snoorkeling in Kalpitiya
The largest coral reef in Sri Lanka (‘Bar reef') is only an hour's boat trip from Kalpitiya. This beautiful reef is home to an incredible variety of tropical fish as well as offering sighting of manta rays, reef sharks and the occasional turtle! Diving and Snorkeling are not possible during the southwest monsoon period (May to November). The best times are therefore between late November and early May. The underwater currents in the seas off Kalpitiya are generally not strong, but are influenced by small tide changes of two high water and two low water tides.
